CURRENT MOON
Mackerel Islands Fishing Report

The Mackerel Islands has really lived up to its name this past week, the Spanish Mackerel have been going off – with 18-20kg Mackies attacking lures and floating mulies as soon as they hit the water, leaving fishermen with sore arms, broken gear and stories of double and triple hook ups!

Chris Grech and his crew had a close encounter with a Stripy Marlin just west of Rosily in about 60m of water, they’d been trawling with 5 lines out the back and stopped to pull in the lures, and the marlin appeared right at the back of the boat…quick as they could they got the lines in the water again and started moving, only no one got a hit. So they stopped again and pulled their lines in only to have the marlin reappear at the back of the boat. After playing this game a couple more times the marlin finally hit a line and ran, after fighting for a bit, unfortunately the marlin got off the line (but its all about the adventure right?)

The charter boat saw its fair share of action this week. One charter had a great day catching nice sized Spangled Emperor, Honeycomb Cod and Painted Sweetlips all day, and right at the end hit a patch of huge Rankin Cod, bringing in 5 nice cod ranging from 7 -9kg each!

The action on the bottom has not disappointed either, good catches of Spangled and Red Emperor can still be found in 20-30m of water. The squid are still to be found hanging around the moorings and jetty at night – entertaining the kids and adults alike with a couple of monster sized squids proving to be good action on the light gear.

Broome Fishing Report

There has been plenty of Spanish mackerel anywhere from 1 – 20km out. Fish to 17 kilos were reported with lures and live baits working equally well. Tuna were also found in decent schools but those targeting the mackies.

The bottom fishing offshore has been bountiful with bags limits of snapper, bluebone and coral trout being reported.

The sailfish action has hotted up recently on the neap tides with fish to 25 kilos being caught north of town. The best reports have come from north of town around The Peanut. As usual, switch baiting has accounted for the majority of sails.

The jetty has been fishing well for various species of trevally along with queenfish with white feather jigs working the best. Sharks were a problem with the men in grey taking their fair share of fish.

Anglers heading to the creeks have reported jacks and big blue salmon on the incoming tides.

Exmouth Fishing Report

Junior angler Lane Berry from Dianella is the happy angler pictured this week with his fantastic catch of a golden trevally off Bundegi Jetty this week. Nine year old Lane has entered in the monthly fishing competition and is in the running to win a gift voucher this month. He is also in the draw for the yearly prize of over $700 worth of fishing gear. The golden trevally weighed 3kg, was 45cm long and was caught on 4kg line using a hard bodied gold and black Bolt Taser lure.

Anglers enjoying the sunset on town beach have been lucky to see some great evenings this week with glass conditions and a high tide with a few bream cruising the shoreline. The relaxed atmosphere of people sitting on their chairs as boats cruise back to the marina, the sun sets and people walk their dogs along the beach is one to enjoy: catching a fish as well is purely a bonus.

Early morning has been the optimal time to chase mackerel lately. You have to be keen though and ensure you are well and truly on the grounds with lures in the water before dawn. Once it reaches 9am, the mackerel tend to

sit deep and not be interested in the lures as much. If you are not an

early riser, then berleying up with mulies and sending out a floating whole scalie mackerel works well to bring the fish to the surface. The mulies will attract the species such as mackerel, but it is advised not to cut up fish baits, as that will attract the sharks.

The Exmouth Game Fishing Club has got the Ultra-Light fishing Tournament coming up very soon in August. If you are good at patience, skill and light line fishing on 1,2,3,4 and 6kg line, then this is the event for you.

Juniors and women (no offence to others intended!) tend to be good at this style of fishing, so come on girls and kids, jump onboard a boat and get involved with this fun week-end competition. There are plenty of prizes up for grabs including Maui sunnies, Anima prints, vouchers from businesses and all sorts. For further information drop down to the club, into Bluewater or check out the website http://www.egfc.com.au/

Geraldton Fishing Report

Chopper tailor were reported from the 1st and 2nd Point’s at Greenough. West Bank and a bit further south had a great run of fat tailor to 4 kilos with the majority being between 1 and 2 kilos. The same area also saw a good mulloway run this past week with fish to 1 metre reports although the majority were in that schoolie size of 50 – 60cm.

Further north from Geraldton to Coronation some nice school and yellowfin whiting were taken in the clean spots between the weed.

The town rock walls were fishing well for skippy to 1kg and average herring and school whiting. Black bream were found around the rock walls of the harbour.

The boat reports were a little slow due to the swell. Those who got out found pink snapper to 8 kilos, red throat to 60cm and spangled emperor to 4 kilos from SW Bank and towards the islands. Lots of dhufish were reported but most were small with only a few 12 kilo specimens hitting the deck. Good baldchin and coral trout seemed to be caught over most coral.

Kalbarri Fishing Report

It’s been a great week in Kalbarri with the fish playing the game for all the anglers on holiday up here at the moment. Tailor to 80cm were reported from the river mouth and a 110cm mulloway was caught.

The beaches south of town finally became fishable after the rough weather with Red Bluff and Wittecarra Creek producing garfish, herring, skippy and good numbers of whiting. The cliffs south of town were giving up a few good pinkies for the land based guys.

The boaties were still getting into some pelagic action north of town with the odd mackerel landed. There were also rumours of sailfish in the same area. Tuna continue to be spotted in Jakes Bay and along the coastal cliffs south of town. Dhufish were caught along the cliffs along with snapper and red throat while those who headed west found some snapper, dhufish and red emperor.

Mulloway to 15 kilos have been coming from the Sandy Cape area. Tailor, skippy and herring have been taken from the mouth of the marina.

Offshore it’s been amazing in Jurien this past week with dhufish reported from in close and all the way out wide. Fish to 15 kilos were reported with the majority being around 8 kilos. Big bull headed snapper to 90cm were widespread while Samson fish to 40 kilos were caught in the 40’s and 50’s. A few amberjack were mixed in with the sambos.

There was a load of bait around which in turn brought various tuna in for an easy feed.
